Week 7, Day 1

Welcome to Week 7! This week, we will be wrapping up our first wave of projects, hearing from two guest speakers, and preparing for our end-of-internship showcase. Today, you will prep for tomorrow’s guest speaker, Dr. Kelli Gary, as well as meet with Conor and your PM to discuss moving onto a second project for the last two weeks.

Expert Guest Speaker: Dr. Kelli Gary, Ph.D., MPH, OTR/L

• Tomorrow, we’ll be hearing from Dr. Kelli Gary, Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling, at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and a member of the leadership team for the Culture, Race, and Health Core in the VCU Institute on Inclusion, Inquiry, and Innovation. Please read the PDF linked below in preparation for their talk. Come prepared with at least one question to ask them!

• Guest Speaker Reading: Differences in employment outcomes 10 years after traumatic brain injury among racial and ethnic minority groups.

Projects

• We’ll take some time to set up check-in meetings relating to your projects in our meeting today. Continue working on your projects, and make sure to let your PMs know when you hit a review point.

• Last-weeks projects! If you’ve finished your primary project and are looking for other work, consider writing a pitch for Public Health post, which is a health and social justice blog with a wide readership. Take a look at a few of their research and viewpoint articles to get a feel for their style.
