Week 6, Day 1

Welcome to Week 6! Today, you’ll prepare for this week’s first expert guest speaker, Stephen Casper, as well as get started on your third newsletter synopsis. Make sure to reach out to PMs to schedule a check-in regarding the readability of your project drafts if you have not done so recently!

New Tasks/Notifications

Newsletter Writing

  • As a reminder, you’ve been split up into 2 groups for newsletter writing. Each group will write a full newsletter during the same period (Monday-Tuesday of every other week), but Group A’s synopses will be published on the same week, and Group B’s synopses will be published on the following week. Both groups’ synopses will be due tomorrow at 5 pm PST.

    • Group A (Publishing July 22): Elizabeth Zhao, Julia Brzac, Lori Mae Yvette Calibuso Acob, Nathan Campbell, Wyatt Hill, Christine Hau, Emma Chin, Chelsea Ryan, Melissa Brown

    • Group B (Publishing July 29): Clovis Wong, Karina Suwal, Meena Shanmugam, Alex Widman, Alyssa Schaechinger, Han Nguyen, Bethany Lazo, Calder Stenn, Aamy Woldesenbet

  • Choosing a Category/Synopsis: July 22/July 29 Update Document

    • When you want to start writing, check your group’s final document to see what categories have already been claimed. Choose a category that has not yet been claimed and write your name in red underneath that category.

    • Then, go to the Update Document linked above and look through the potential sources in that category. When you choose a source to write about, post a comment that you’re writing about that source in the Update Document, and then copy the link over to your category in your final document. Let your PM know that you’ve successfully selected and commented on which source from the update doc you’re using.

    • As a reminder, the newer sources are near the top of each category header, and you can navigate the document by the outline on the left side of the google docs layout.

    • There are fourteen total categories, and each of you will pick one, so that means that we will publish about nine categories for each newsletter, plus the Opportunities category, which Malayka will write.

    • For each newsletter, we want to be sure to cover the four topics listed below. If you look at your group’s final document and see one of these topics is still available, please consider taking writing on one of them and checking out the relevant sources on the update document.

      • Therapies Currently Available

      • Self-care

      • Youth

      • Women’s Health

  • Please run your synopsis through Grammarly before submitting it. You all should have a Grammarly Premium subscription (provided by Concussion Alliance). If you have not received an invitation for Premium, let us know.

Expert Guest Speaker: Stephen Casper

  • Tomorrow, we’ll be hearing from Stephen Casper, whose work focuses on disparities and historical perspectives in relation to concussions. Please review the lecture linked below in the Concussion Curriculum section in preparation for their talk. Come prepared with at least one question to ask them!

Projects

  • Continue working on your individual projects. Be conscious of your planned timeline and think about checking in with your PM about the readability and accessibility of your drafts. If you feel confident about your final draft, please let your PM know so that Conor and Malayka can give it a final review and approve it for publishing.
