Week 2, Day 1

Welcome to Week 2! We’ll still be bringing you educational materials and resources so you can continue to learn about mTBI, this week we’ll be transitioning to a heavier focus on content creation. Today you’ll be able to choose (and begin writing) your newsletter synopses, and Wednesday you’ll hear from Shaken Brain author Elizabeth Sandel, MD, following our Tuesday discussion on chapter 1-4 of her book.

Tasks today are related to Newsletter Synopsis and Project selection:

  • Newsletter - please read this thoroughly

    • Because we have such a large cohort this summer, we’ll be adopting a new procedure for newsletter writing. You’ll split up into 2 groups (we’ll keep the same groups from 2 truths and a lie). Each group will write a full newsletter during the same period (Monday-Tuesday of every other week), but Group A’s synopses will be published on the same week, and Group B’s synopses will be published on the following week. Both groups’ synopses will be due tomorrow at 5pm PST.

      • Group A (Publishing June 24): Elizabeth Zhao, Julia Brzac, Lori Mae Yvette Calibuso Acob, Nathan Campbell, Wyatt Hill, Christine Hau, Emma Chin, Chelsea Ryan, Melissa Brown

      • Group B (Publishing July 1): Clovis Wong, Karina Suwal, Meena Shanmugam, Alex Widman, Alyssa Schaechinger, Han Nguyen, Bethany Lazo, Calder Stenn, Aamy Woldesenbet

    • Choosing a Category/Synopsis: June 24/July 1 Update Document

      • When you want to start writing, check your group’s final document to see what categories have already been claimed. Choose a category that has not yet been claimed and write your name in red underneath that category.

      • Then, go to the Update Document linked above and look through the potential sources in that category. When you choose a source to write about, comment that you’re writing about that source in the Update Document, and then copy the link over to your category in your final document.

      • As a reminder, the newer sources are near the top of each category header, and you can navigate the document by the outline on the left side of the google docs layout.

      • There are fourteen total categories, and each of you will pick one, so that means that we will publish about nine categories for each newsletter, plus the Opportunities category, which Malayka will write.

      • There are a couple of categories that we want to be sure to cover for each edition of the newsletter:

        • Therapies Currently Available

        • Self-care

        • Youth

        • Women’s Health

    • Grammarly Premium subscription for all interns. We’ve sent each of you an invitation to Grammarly Premium. Please run your synopsis through Grammarly before submitting it.

  • Project Preference Form (URGENT)

    • Please fill out the above form listing your working preference (solo/partner) and your top 5 projects AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. We can’t assign projects until everyone fills this out so please make sure to get to this form BEFORE 1PM PST TODAY.

Educational Resources:

  1. Read What Happens to Your Brain When You Get a Concussion? and What Happens to Your Brain When You Get a Concussion: a Deeper Dive. Caroline worked with another intern last summer to create these pages with help from Dr. Sandel.

  2. Read Shaken Brain, Ch. 3-4 in preparation for our discussion tomorrow.

  3. Take the second unit of the Stanford University Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): Writing in the Science.
