Week 2, Day 1

Welcome to Week 2! While we’ll still be bringing you educational materials and resources so you can continue to learn about mTBI, this week we’ll be transitioning to content creation. On Monday you’ll begin writing your first Newsletter synopses. As you finish your Newsletter work, we’ll be transitioning to your first projects, meeting with Eloïse and Conor individually to get started.

There is two tasks to do today:

  • Newsletter: See instructions below regarding newsletter writing

  • Thank you’s to Dr. Eve Valera. Please write a sentence (or a couple of sentences) of appreciation in this document by the end of Tuesday night.

Educational Resources - Article & Podcast on Football:

Because the primary focus of today is the Newsletter, we wanted to keep your educational materials a little shorter. You’ll listen to a podcast by Kathleen Bachynski, Assistant Professor of Public Health at Muhlenberg College, about the ethics of US Football and her 2019 book “No Game for Boys to Play.” Alongside that is a letter to the editor that she authored for The Atlantic.

Materials, & Resources

Newsletter

From our Newsletter Hub, you can access the source document for the June 25th newsletter. Use the procedures established in the style guide (available on the Newsletter Hub) to claim your first topic; please select only one topic at first to allow others time to choose theirs. When you’ve written your synopsis, you may need to select another topic and write a further synopsis; we’ll be covering this in our Monday Meeting.

Kathleen Bachynski & Football

Although football is not the focus of our organization, we thought that you would benefit from learning a bit more about the conversation regarding the ethics of the sport organizationally, youth football as a health crisis, and more. Because of football’s popularity in the U.S., this particular sport has become one of the most visible platforms for public education and societal expectations/understanding of concussions/mTBI and TBI.
