Week 1, Day 4

Happy Thursday everyone! Today we’ll check in about how the week has been going so far, hear from former intern Caroline Saksena, and finish our Two Truths and a Lie game!

There are three Tasks to do today:

(If you haven’t yet) Internship Learning Plan

  • Some of you will have an Internship Learning Plan that you’ve been given by your school to complete and have your supervisor sign. Even if your school hasn’t provided a learning plan, we think that the structure of intentionally setting learning goals will help you make the best of your internship. Schedule a 15-minute meeting with your PM intern for sometime this week to plan out your learning goals. If you don’t have a plan from your school, your PM will provide you with a template that we’ve created.

(If you haven’t yet) Thank-You to Dan Fogarty

  • Take a moment to share your thanks to Tuesday’s guest speaker, Dan Fogarty, in the document linked above! Write a short message to Dan (preferably signed with your first name), and once we have thank-yous from everyone we’ll send the document on to him.

  • If you have any questions for Dan or want to reach out to him, you can reach him by email at: dfoges422@gmail.com

Prep Work for Friday’s Newsletter Writing Workshop

  • Tomorrow we’ll be holding a Newsletter Writing Workshop to help you get comfortable writing for the newsletter.

  • Once you’ve gone through the three Newsletter Prep curriculum pieces, read two newsletters:

  • Once you’ve watched the two science writing modules (see Newsletter prep below) and read these two newsletters, pick one synopsis from either of the articles to rewrite.

  • Go back to the source document (paper/article/etc), then use the processes that you’ve learned from the modules to practice writing your own synopsis of the source. While we don’t have hard word count limits, the best synopses often fall in the 150-250 word range. When you’ve finished, compare your synopsis to the original one in preparation for tomorrow’s workshop.

Projects Announced!

  • Today we’re announcing the potential projects that you’ll have the opportunity to work on this internship! Each project has details about its scope and the number of project team members we’d like to assign to it. There are way more projects than we’ll get to this summer, but we wanted to give you the option to choose between them.

  • Take a look at the project document list today; on tomorrow’s page you’ll fill out a Google Form indicating your top 3 projects and working preferences.

Two Truths & A Lie pt. 2

  • We thought that playing two truths and a lie would be a fun way to get to know one another better. Because we have such a big cohort and other things happening both today and tomorrow, we’ll be splitting into two groups and finishing off Wednesday and Thursday with one group each day.

  • Going today:

    • Clovis Wong, Karina Suwal, Alex Widman, Alyssa Schaechinger, Han Nguyen, Bethany Lazo, Calder Stenn, Aamy Woldesenbet

    • If you see your name listed above, take a few minutes today to think about which two truths you want to share and which lie you want to try and fool us with this afternoon!

Work through this curriculum for today:

  1. Read Chapter 2 of “Shaken Brain: The Science, Treatment, and Care of Concussion”

  2. Newsletter prep: Watch Galen Moller’s webinar on our style guide and writing for our newsletter

  3. Newsletter prep: Read this Tip Sheet: A Getting-Started Guide for Newcomers to Science Writing
