Week 1, Day 3
This focus of this week is primarily educational, to get everyone up to speed about the science regarding concussions, and to focus on remote teamwork. The end of this week and the start of next week will focus on writing the Concussion Update newsletter; the next edition of the newsletter comes out on June 25. After the newsletter, we will launch into projects.
There are two tasks to do today:
Creating your learning plan: Based off Yale Office of Career Strategy’s template, we’d like you to create the first draft of your learning plan.
Write up project: See instructions below for the prompt regarding practice for newsletter writing.
Educational Resources - Catt, Yale learning plan, Newsletter Prep:
Today, we want to take the opportunity to give you the opportunity to start reflecting on your internship and continue providing necessary tools for writing about concussions. Our materials will focus on engaging with the newsletter after seeing Julian’s presentation, providing concussion training, and creating a learning plan.
Materials, & Resources
Catt Online Concussion Awareness Training Tools
We want to take the opportunity to give you background on concussions as well as the resources available for their diagnosis, management and treatment. To complete this endeavor, we will be having you attend online concussion training courses. These modules will cover recognition, response, recovery and prevention with different audiences in mind. Please complete:
Learning Plan
In this task we are asking you to reflect on your goals for the internship. You should base yourself off the template provided by Yale’s Office of Career Strategy. While Yale asks for specific details, we would like you to think of this as a first draft. Brainstorm what you want to learn during this internship, what goals you want to set and how Concussion Alliance’s infrastructure will allow you to achieve them.
Newsletter
As you get ready to write your first synopses for the newsletter, we thought that you would benefit from seeing the initial work of other Carls. Please continue to get acquainted with past newsletters.
We would like you to read three newsletters written by our December 2019 externs. They are 12/5, 12/12, 12/19. These should give you an idea of how past students began writing. You can think about how they differ in content, style, and structure from the newsletters you read yesterday that were written by the core team.
Writing prompt. We would like you to get practice with writing for the newsletter while also using some of the resources from Julian’s talk. Pick an article based on a scientific paper from a past newsletter. Use the framework provided from yesterday’s presentation to discuss the validity of the synopsis, practice your skepticism, and analyze the material. You should go back to the original source/ paper for this task. We would then like you to then rewrite the synopsis and improve on its quality and judgement. You do not necessarily have to be critical of the past writer’s work but you should try to exercise your best critical thinking skills.
Refer to the Style Guide for assistance on writing the paragraphs.
If you need any refreshing, we will be uploading the meeting recording promptly.
