Week 1, Day 2

Welcome to the second day of your externship with Concussion Alliance! We are excited to work with you and to get to know you better. Thank you for joining us.

We are looking forward to helping you get up to speed on your concussion knowledge and then up and running on your projects this week. You’ll have concussion curriculum every day, and we’ll spend time on remote teamwork and shared learning. You’ll also start doing background research on your projects and learn about our process in preparation for writing for the newsletter next week.

Our first expert guest speaker is Dan Fogarty on Thursday; Dan is a concussion patient and advocate, as well as a CA community member. We’ll also be having a discussion on Shaken Brain on Friday.

There is one task today: if you have not done so already, send Conor your bio and photo (for the website), via Slack or email.

Educational Resources -

1. Watch these short videos from the University of Calgary’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the diagnosis of concussion.

  • Video: Concussion Recognition Tool 5 (5+ minutes)

  • Video: Evaluation of Concussion in the Emergency Room (6+ minutes). The GCS is the Glasgow Coma Scale.

    • Persons with GCS scores of 3 to 8 are classified with a severe TBI, those with scores of 9 to 12 are classified with a moderate TBI, and those with scores of 13 to 15 are classified with a mild TBI. (CDC)

  • Video: Overview of the future of imaging & biomarkers, and the window of vulnerability (9+ minutes)

2. Catt Online Concussion Awareness Training Tools

We want to take the opportunity to give you background on concussions as well as the resources available for their diagnosis, management and treatment. To complete this endeavor, we will be having you attend online concussion training courses. These modules will cover recognition, response, recovery and prevention with different audiences in mind. Please complete the module below

3. Read Shaken Brain Ch. 2 (p. 33-64)

  • We’ll be having a group discussion on chapters 1-3 this Friday

4. Spend a little time perusing the CDC Head's Up resource. The information here is basic but it’s good to know what’s being put out by the major national organizations. As you’re looking through the material, think critically about what you would add based on what you’ve learned so far this week. Take what time you need on this, but we’d recommend 15-30 minutes.
